Cucumber is probably the best NATURAL diuretic known to mankind, secreting and promoting the flow of urine. Thinking detox? This is your best juice in the morning to help your body continue it’s elimination process and enhance a healing state. Cucumber Juice also has many more valuable properties too. For example, the promotion of hair growth, due to high silicon and sulphur content, particularly when mixed with carrot, lettuce and spinach juice. Cucumbers contains more than 40% potassium, 10% sodium, 8% calcium. 20% phosphorus and 7% choline. I LOVE Cucumber juice and try my best to make it a staple in my daily diet by incorporating it with lemons and apples. I know it has helped my skin and my hair tremendously. Just think how quickly all the daily pollutants and toxins get pulled from my body…quicker than most….all because I’m nourishing it with LIVE living food that is working…

What does it mean to be Gluten-Free? It’s estimated that 1 in 133 Canadians or 250,000 people have celiac disease (and it’s growing) and approximately 3 million Americans. It’s a lifelong, genetically based disorder that occurs when gluten – a protein found in wheat, rye and barley – triggers an abnormal immune response that damages the lining of the small intestine interfering with the absorption of vital nutrients. It can be painful and debilitating. Symptoms can include anemia, diarrhea, arthritis, intense abdominal pain, weight loss and, in children, delayed growth. But most people have symptoms that are subtler, such as bloating, excess gas or fatigue. People who have gluten ‘sensitivity’ will also benefit from a gluten-free diet. These people test negative for celiac disease but react poorly to gluten and may report abdominal pain, headaches, irritability, depression and chronic fatigue. There’s no evidence, however, that following a gluten-free diet will…

Many of us go through our days awake, but following patterns we’ve developed over the years. We are going through the motions, doing things at home, online, at work without much forethought. Contrast this with the idea of an Intentional Life: everything you do is done with consciousness, fulfilling one of your core values (compassion, for example). Everything is done with a conscious intent. It’s true that many things we do have some kind of intent — I’m washing the dishes because I don’t want a messy house or bugs in my kitchen; I’m driving to work because I need to make a living; I’m driving my kids to school because they need to get an education and have a social network. But after repeating these actions every day, the intent kind of fades into the background so that we are barely aware of them. We’ve figured out the intent long ago,…

I am so blessed with my life. Every day I get to wake up and share my passion of health with people who are able to come into Kelly’s Bake Shoppe and for those of you that connect with my personal website and blog. For those of you who have had the opportunity to come into our two businesses, thank you for gracing us with your patronage and your support. My hope is that our infectious love for GOOD FOOD will spill out to the planet and into each and every one of your hearts and homes. We can all make a difference to someone else’s life and to “reach out and love” is in us inherently. Each one of us has that duty and obligation with every gift we have been individually given to share it. My enthusiasm and love for what I do every day (to help people…

Each and every day, life offers us countless opportunities for new growth, exciting adventures and the chance to be exactly who we want to be – but we rarely see more than a sliver of the miraculous possibilities around us. You see, most of us are too busy doing what we think we have to do, that we never get around to doing what we truly want to do. So many people talk about following their dreams and it’s only a tiny fraction of humanity who are actually going for it, each and every day. The path of stepping up is not always easy. I can tell you first hand that the higher you go, the more challenges and obstacles can come your way. But I can also tell you that it gets better as you keep going. Perseverance is the key and trusting your heart to show you the…

What a SURPRISE it was!!! This was the invitation that everyone received!! Wow! Thank you to Ken (my creative genius) and everyone else who made this happen!! They say happiness is a state of mind…For me, this was the “Real Deal”. I was overwhelmed with a happiness I had never felt before. This ‘grateful’ post to my family is a little late as the party was September 18th but Ken and I decided to take off for a few days to Montreal right after the party. When we got home last Thursday, the businesses needed our attention and before you know it, 10 days have gone by. I’m so sorry!! This note is for my wonderful husband Ken and my beautiful daughter Erinn and her dashing boyfriend, Mike. I still can’t believe what they did for me and totally blew my mind AWAY. Somehow they got together about 80+ of…

Awesomeness at 50. Celebrating my half century today! (and being cool in my own skin). My goodness it’s here and I’m okay. I made it! I’m the same person that I was 20, 30, 40 years ago….but I have to say, only a better, more refined and updated model. 🙂 To think of all the ups and downs, and good and bad struggles in my life and to have mastered them all and be where I am today gives me these goose bumps and shivers through my core. I can’t imagine living my last 50 years any other way and I’m very grateful for all of my lessons and ‘teachers’ that have come graciously into my life. I feel GREAT! Better than ever! 50 is Fabulous! 50 is Liberating! 50 is knowing who I am and to not be afraid to be it. 50 is the ultimate in Feminine Energy…

The older I get, the faster life flies by and summer, is well….sort of over, and we are now approaching fall? Saying that, we now get to focus on savoury comfort foods at Kelly’s Bake Shoppe and LettuceLove Cafe  (Erinn’s favourite time of year!). As I said in an earlier post, I LOVE pumpkin every day of the year, it doesn’t have to be cold weather for me. Pumpkin is a warming or comforting flavour, it’s easy to work with and totally full of a different kind of nutrition, that we really don’t get enough of during the other seasons. Pumpkin is incredibly rich in vital anti-oxidants and vitamins like Vitamin A (a cancer protective anti-oxidant and one serving of pumpkin gives us 246% RDA). This humbly healthy vegetable is very low in calories yet a tremendous source of Copper, Magnesium (Bone Health), Calcium (who needs a cow?!), Phosphorus, Potassium. It is also…

How unbelievable…It still has me in shock when they read out our names for these THREE awards at the Toronto Vegetarian Food Festival (the Biggest one in North America I might add…) on Sunday night. We won these awards against some very tough competition and we just wouldn’t have been able to do it without our fans…THANK YOU so much. xo As you can see, Erinn (my best bud ever!) and I were having a very hard time containing ourselves….. 1st Prize – BEST BAKERY – Kelly’s Bake Shoppe 1st Prize – BEST DESSERT – Mile High Brownie 1st Prize – BEST RESTAURANT (outside Toronto) What an honour to bestow upon us….Thank you to everyone who voted for us. Humbly, we are so very grateful for all of your love and support since day one. Erinn and I were thrilled to have our two main men with us too….Ken and…

I thought I’d share this healthy and delicious smoothie. We featured it often at our restaurant, LettuceLove Cafe, and the customers always love it! It tastes like Carrot Cake which makes it an instant “FALL IN LOVE” moment with the kids and if any of you know me by now, you know that this is ALWAYS my primary focus. To get kids turned ON to loving REAL FOOD!! For me, I’m always thinking about children’s palates (their sense of taste) and how they have changed over the past 30 years. So many children now have been swayed from healthy, whole food by the likes of McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Mars (Bar) Incorporated, Dairy Industry, Sugar Assoc.(Washington DC), etc. that they have no clear idea what REAL food should taste like and are subjected to the daily onslaught of media propaganda and peer pressure. It takes brave moms and dads and other care-givers…
