The biggest reason people fail at creating and sticking to new habits is that they don’t keep doing it. (Well, that makes obvious sense doesn’t it?) For 2014, I think this is a year to really change things up and shake things up. We NEED to create some new soul-serving habits and discard all old habits don’t serve our greater good. For most, the hardest thing to do is to keep these New Year resolutions and goals and hopefully new habits that serve us well. It’s difficult for the majority of us to stick to a new regimen and develop new routines that allow us to improve our lives. I’ve got some ideas that might just help you create a new blueprint of YOU. One that incorporates some healthy, inspiring ideas into our daily lives and routines and will only IMPROVE what we get back from our life. Honestly, this…

This is what I made for myself today. Simple and very refreshing! Love this!! I always believe that your day must start from the inside out and to take the time to make your own juice will reward you on so many levels. This recipe can be doubled to make twice as much and nourish you for a little while longer. You can easily drink this juice from a travel cup and drink it on your drive to the office or to drop the kids off at school. If you make extra, this is the perfect nutrition for the kids to start their day too. A healthy body gives them a healthy mind to learn well. Green Juice Recipe 1 lemon 5 kale leaves handful mint handful spinach 1 knob ginger 2 cucumbers (medium) 1 red apple  Juice everything together in your juicer in this order and then pour and enjoy.…

I have a million vegan and gluten-free cookbooks and of those one million cookbooks, they have 1000’s of hummus recipes. That must mean I’ve gone through about a billion hummus recipes and funny enough, after all this time, none have made me totally happy. So today I set out to make a crazy delicious and creamy gluten-free and vegan hummus recipe and one that can have some instant, flavourful variations made to it too. Served in sandwiches, with crackers or chopped veggies this is a versatile, healthy, high protein dip that no one tires of. We’re going to start with the 1st step and that is the tahini. I can’t stress enough that it is critical to use only RAW tahini, not roasted (sesame seed) tahini. Roasted tahini will change the flavour of the hummus completely and will also remove some of the health benefits of the tahini (sesame seed butter).…

A ¼ cup of sesame seeds (and also found in RAW tahini which is sesame seed butter) is rich in vital minerals such as: manganese (contains 44% daily value and helps to normalize blood sugar levels) magnesium (contains 32% daily value and is needed for bone health) calcium (contains 36% daily value and is helpful with migraines and osteoporosis) copper (contains 74% daily value and provides relief from Rheumatoid arthritis) iron (contains 29% daily value and is needed for oxygen delivery in our blood) zinc (contains 18.6% daily value and helps with hip fractures and bone mineral density). Feel free to sprinkle them daily on everything from quinoa, brown rice or even a salad. They instantly make your meal a little more dressed up.

Teff Brownies. Who would’ve thought? For most, I bet you have never heard of this nutritious grain/flour. I personally love the teff grain and experienced it a few years back in an Ethiopian restaurant and admired the taste of the flour they used to make their flat bread called enjera. One of the smallest grains in the world, it dates back to over 4000 years on this planet. I think what I love about eating gluten-free baking is that the grains and flours can be so densely nutritious. Teff is about 12% protein and it leads all other grains in its calcium content. A cup of cooked teff offers about 123mg of calcium which is comparable to a half-cup cooked spinach. Teff is also an excellent source of vitamin C, a micronutrient not commonly found in grains. It’s also very high in fibre and B vitamins. Due to it’s earthy…

This is how we coined the term, “Are you living your life yet”. It came out of my very soul when discussing the transformation that happens to people (in their mind, body and soul), when you change how you eat. It took a long time to make this cookie and my motivation came from so many people walking into our bake shoppe and requesting a healthy “Energy” Cookie with no ’empty calories’. One with tons of nutrition, soy-free, gluten-free and vegan too, so that means no allergens like dairy products, no eggs, no dairy, no wheat, no nuts, no unhealthy saturated fats and I also added tons of ‘love’ (that always makes things taste better and makes them healthier!!). Everything that is in it is intentionally put in for optimal health reasons. I practice this all the time and I’m pretty diligent at it because I know how good I feel when I eat…

More giggling in the New Year…what a concept and totally attainable. Even for this fresh, brand new 50 year old from 2013! In the spirit of not overburdening ourselves with too many ideas and goals and resolutions – I’m keeping this post short and hopefully, very sweet for you. What I’ve always found with “New Year’s Resolutions” is that it mostly weighs people down with goals and overwhelms us in so many ways – especially if the resolutions are struggles and aren’t being adhered to and we fail. We ultimately start with negative chatter in our minds and disappointing ourselves and this really makes no one happy – especially us. Time to say “NO” to these harsh and restrictive goals. Sometimes it’s just simply too much to burden our minds with ideas that we aren’t good enough (for example, if I lose 40 lbs. – then I will be happy…

2014 is about loving the planet even more. There are so many challenges we face trying to co-exist with the current explosive over-population growth on the planet, the over-fishing of the oceans, the destruction of valuable forests to make more oil in the tar sands or grow feed for livestock in the Amazon, the overuse and polluting of fresh drinking water. These are just some of the things that I think about every day. I’m going to send more love to it, be grateful for this amazing unique and diverse,  ecosystem and do our best to protect it and to value our priceless natural resources that will never come back…at least not in our lifetimes. With gratefulness to Mother Earth for 2014,

The more I realize how the state of gratefulness benefits my joy and happiness, the more I try to practice it every moment of the day. It aligns me instantly with my deepest passions. This past year has been such an incredible year for me and my family and extended our family (our wonderful staff!!) at Kelly’s Bake Shoppe and Lettuce Love Cafe. Thank you to all of our customers and friends who have been there for us through it all. We’re on a path to change the world, one cupcake and green smoothie at a time, and to encourage deep healing and a re-connection with Mother Earth through delicious whole foods and to get everyone ‘back into the kitchen’ and say “NO” to industrialized junk food. Our staff continue to dazzle me every day and this post is about how grateful I am for them. Thank you to EVERY…

Quinoa (prounounced keen-wa) was a staple food for the South American Indians living in the high altitudes of the Andes Mountains. The Incas likened to call it the “Chisaya Mama” or the “Mother of all Grains”. It was immensely popular because it was one of few crops that could survive in such high altitudes (10,000 – 20,000 feet above sea level). It could withstand frost, intense sun and the often dry conditions that characterized the Andean climate. It was also recognized for its superior nutritional qualities. For these reasons, it was dubbed “Mother of all Grains” and Quinoa came to have spiritual significance for them. Many traditions and ceremonies surrounded the cultivation, harvest and consumption of quinoa for these people. Quinoa is a “pseudo-grain”-  it’s actually a gluten-free seed, but used in cooking like a whole grain. This nutrient-rich grain is a wonderful source of complete protein, providing all of…
